5/20/16 Brickyard Pond/veterans memorial walk in Barrington, RI

Brickyard Pond/Veterans Memorial Park, Barrington, RI
Trip Leader: Michael Kieron
19 Participants

It was a nice, warm morning starting at 8:07am with a temperature in the mid
60s. First bird observed was an Osprey on nest in the softball field.
Orioles were busy completing their nests and we watched the nests moving as
either finishing touches or eggs were being added. Along the lake shore we
watched more Ospreys successfully diving for fish. Other birds with a fish
breakfast on their mind included many Double-crested Cormorants, at least 4
Great Blue Herons, and a Black-crowned Night-Heron. We also observed a
Belted Kingfisher coming back and forth to the same clay bank. On the trails
heading into the woods, there were a number of American Redstarts and a pair
of Warbling Vireos constructing a nest. At one point, the male joined the
female at the partially completed nest. Close to the end, an Eastern
Wood-Pewee was heard calling very loudly along one of the main trails and
was eventually located and seen for several minutes before flying off. A
Cooper's Hawk was briefly seen by the boat ramp at the beginning of the trip
and then seen flying low over the YMCA parking lot as the last of us made it
back from the walk.

With wind blowing from the west, temperature at 7:15 AM ~ 50 degrees, the loop around the west side and top of the hill were fairly quiet.  The East side of the hill exposed to the sun and protected from the wind was much more productive for spring migrants and warblers.  The very first bird of the day was a Yellow Billed Cuckoo perched on an exposed branch on the east side of the hill. It remained clearly visible for several minutes to the delight of all.

Walk sponsored by Barrington Library and Ocean State Bird Club, led by Lauren Parmelee of ASRI; 16 participants. Weather as we started out was a bit overcast, slightly misty and cool but pleasant.  Walked on path from parking lot to shore of Mt Hope Bay.  By the end of the walk the sun and blue sky had emerged. For future reference, new policy in place.  The parking lot entrance is now gated, open from 8 am to 6 pm.

5/9/16 High Rock Farm in cumberland, RI

Led by Dave Gumbley and Don Heitzman, it was a beautiful sunny day, a first time at High Rock Farm for a number of us. High Rock Farm was a great hot spot with varied habitat's and elevations.  We had some great looks at Orioles, Tanagers, Grosbeaks and Indigo Buntings as well as Blue Winged, Yellow Warblers and American Redstart.  These are beautiful sightings for everyone, but especially for some of the newer birders in the group.  After most folks had departed a few of us heard a Pileated Woodpecker calling.  Well worth a revisit and only 20 minutes from Providence!
