June 22, 2017. 9:00 - 11:30. A perfect day -- sunny and breezy, clear blue sky, 70's.
Six kayakers put in on the Blackstone River at the boat launch on Madeira Ave off Broad Street in Central Falls. Led by Phil Tetrault, during a tranquil paddle on this oasis of water and wilderness in the midst of an urban area, 31 species of birds were seen and/or heard. Most visible and numerous species were: Great Blue Herons, Mute Swans, Redwing Blackbirds, Grackles, Chimney Swifts, and Tree, Barn and Northern Roughwing Swallows. Other species seen included: Double-crested Cormorant, Canada Goose, Mallard, Red-tailed Hawk, Eastern Phoebe and Eastern Kingbird, Black-capped Chickadee, Tufted Titmouse, Carolina Wren, Gray Catbird, Starling, Warbling Vireo, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, and Song Sparrow. Species heard only: Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Red-bellied and Downy Woodpeckers, Bluejay, American Crow, House and Marsh Wrens, Gray Catbird, Starling, Yellow Warbler, Common Yellowthroat. All agreed it was a relaxing and lovely experience and would like a repeat in another location. Pulaski Memorial State Park, Providence, Rhode Island, US

Despite still being early in the spring migration season, we had an excellent diversity of species that included species that are early for the date and a few that are on the late side.
The highlight of the trip was seeing a family of Great Horned Owls! We watched the fledglings and adult for only a few minutes and then moved on to see what other migrants we could find.
