Saturday March 21 Birding the Hopkinton Area
meet at 7:30 AM at the Church St. parking lot in Ashaway, RI
Dylan Pedro - pedrodyl@yahoo.com
Join me for some birding around the area of Hopkinton RI on the 21st! We'll start at Ashaway at 7:30 AM in search of vultures at one of RI's most famous roosts. The spruces around Ashaway are a great place to look for both species of vulture. We will meet at the parking lot on Church St. in Ashaway and do a short walk around the neighborhood. From there we can go up to Wyoming Pond, which is typically where some of the first-of-year Tree Swallows, the heralds of spring, gather. From there we will head on over to Long and Ell Pond, which is in my humble opinion one of the most rewarding hikes in RI. However walking may be difficult with the rocky terrain and recent winter storms. The hike involves some interesting habitat full of rhododendron, and once we reach Long Pond you'll see why I enjoy the area so much; the views overlooking the pond remind you of something you might only see in New Hampshire. Long and Ell can also be a good place for Pileated Woodpecker, Barred Owl, and Common Ravens at this time. Duck migration should be in full swing at this point as lakes thaw and waterfowl make their way northward, so any of the ponds mentioned or any along the way may be worth a pitstop. We should finish up around 11:00 or so.
Parking may be limited so please plan to carpool.

Saturday March 28 7:30-11:00 AM Birding Cumberland Farm Fields , Middleborough, MA
In the early spring snow melt makes temporary ponds that attract many ducks, and the bare muddy fields are populated with snipe, woodcock and other shorebirds. Some winter raptors can be still hanging around, and among the hoards of blackbirds we can find rusties or an occasional yellow-headed blackbird. In addition, Cumberland Farm Fields are a haven all year for sparrows, buntings, and finches.
Meet in the parking area off River Street at the north end of the fields. Bring your "Welllies" because the mud can be thick. I will visit the fields a few days before and if the mud is impossible we can postpone until it gets a little drier.
For those planning or interested in the Cumberland Farms fields walk this Saturday March 28th meeting at 7:30 at River st parking area in middleborough, MA. Leslie Bostrum (leader) and Jana did a scouting trip today (thurs) with some great sightings. Highlights: northern goshawk, rough legged hawk, Sandhill crane, snow goose, rusty blackbird, horned lark, wood duck, killdeer, and other more common birds. Area walkable but very muddy, wear waterproof boots. Walk approximately a mile, bring scope if you have one. No bathroom facilities in immediate area. Take 95 north to 495 south, exit on rte 44 east to 105 north and turn right on river st off 105. Parking lot is on right about 1/2 mile from 105. Parking lot is muddy. Car pooling suggested. Leslie has room for two, call her at 401 351 4423 if you want to go with her. Leave a message. She's leaving providence east side at 6:30 am. Jana says if you've never birded this area don't miss it!!!!
I will be driving from Providence and can take 3 passengers if any one wishes to car pool.
