Purple Martin Demonstration
Caratunk Audubon Refuge

Come for a firsthand demonstration of nesting Purple Martins by Ray Marr and learn about his successful voluntary work rebuilding Rhode Island’s Purple Martin colonies. Much of his work has involved discovering and placing the type of housing Martins prefer for nesting, encouraging property owners to install or let him install Martin Houses on their land, and monitoring and tracking Martin success at these sites each nesting season. In 2016 the OSBC sponsored a rack of Purple Martin houses at Caratunk Refuge.

During Ray’s demonstrations and talks he’ll lower the units for some nest checks allowing participants to see many nests with eggs and tiny chicks. Ray will also talk about the history of Martin colonies in the state, their favored locations, and population growth.  He’ll address their nesting time table, requirements, predator protection, parasite control, house sparrow management, favored housing types and how he keeps track of every nest throughout each breeding season

Meeting Location: We will meet at at the refuge lot off Brown Ave (click here for google map directions).

Leader: Ray Marr- [email protected]

Note: The temperature is expected to be 90°F at 11 AM, with a temperature that feels like 99°F at 11 AM.

Tips for Staying Cool in the Heat:

•  Drink lots of water. Staying hydrated is key in hot weather. Pack a water bottle for today's event.
•  Wear light colors. Light colored-clothing absorbs fewer of the sun's rays. It will help keep you cooler.
•  Wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Apply 30 minutes before heading outside, and reapply every 2 hours.
•  Wear a hat with a big brim to keep the sun off your shoulders and face.
