Six kayakers put in on the Blackstone River at the boat launch on Madeira Ave off Broad Street in Central Falls. Led by Phil Tetrault, during a tranquil paddle on this oasis of water and wilderness in the midst of an urban area, 31 species of birds were seen and/or heard.
Most visible and numerous species were: Great Blue Herons, Mute Swans, Redwing Blackbirds, Grackles, Chimney Swifts, and Tree, Barn and Northern Roughwing Swallows.
Other species seen included: Double-crested Cormorant, Canada Goose, Mallard, Red-tailed Hawk, Eastern Phoebe and Eastern Kingbird, Black-capped Chickadee, Tufted Titmouse, Carolina Wren, Gray Catbird, Starling, Warbling Vireo, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, and Song Sparrow.
Species heard only: Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Red-bellied and Downy Woodpeckers, Bluejay, American Crow, House and Marsh Wrens, Gray Catbird, Starling, Yellow Warbler, Common Yellowthroat.
All agreed it was a relaxing and lovely experience and would like a repeat in another location.
