Birds and Beer at the Tilted Barn

5:45-8 pm

Join Nick Pacelli for an evening of talking about birds over a glass of your favorite beverage at the Tilted Barn in Exeter, RI. There should be plenty to talk about as new birds will be coming in daily. Stay for as long or as little as you like. As of this writing, the food truck schedule has not been posted for May so you may want to check their website before you go or eat first. Please note, all food and drink purchases are the responsibility of the purchaser and not the Ocean State Bird Club. Hope to see you there. No registration needed.

May 7, Saturday
Great Swamp 7:30 am

Join Patrick Felker at Great Swamp Wildlife Management Area on Saturday morning May 7th. Patrick knows his birds and bird songs. Birding with him should be a fun and educational experience for all who join him. Migration should be in full swing by this day and there should be plenty of migrants for everyone to enjoy. It is turkey hunting season at Great Swamp so participants are required to wear hunter orange. Please RSVP patbirddude@yahoo.com if you are interested in attending this walk.

May 12, Thursday
Miantonomi Park in Newport
8 am-?

Join Jan St. Jean on a walk at Miantonomi Memorial Park in Newport on Thursday May 12. Mia, as it is called by birders, is the best place in Rhode Island to see migrating warblers. This walk is right in the heart of May migration and there should be a ton of birds. Join Jan for a couple of hours birding the premier hotspot of Rhode Island. Parking is along Hillside Ave. Please RSVP dlsaint@aol.com if you are interested in joining this walk.

A popular spring location among birds and birders, Swan Point Cemetery’s location in Providence and arboretum design make it an attractive green space for migrating species of warblers, vireos and flycatchers. We will spend the morning searching the grounds for migrants by sight and sound.

Note - This is a private cemetery that is very accommodating to birders, out of respect for the owners and families here, please be mindful of the grounds. Please park along Blackstone Boulevard to leave the spaces inside for cemetery business.

Picture
“But in the early 1970s, we were not birdwatching. We were birding, and that made all the difference. We were out to seek, to discover, to chase, to learn, to find as many different kinds of birds as possible — and, in friendly competition, to try to find more of them than the next birder. We became a community of birders, with the complications that human societies always have; and although it was the birds that had brought us together, our story became a human story after all.”
