![]() First Annual RI Cup Big Day Competition on February 11, 2023 The Ocean State Bird Club is excited to announce its First Annual RI Cup BIG Day Competition. The competition is meant to bring together our community of birders for a fun-filled day of birding. Teams of three will compete across the state for an entire day of birding to see or hear and count as many bird species as they can. The contest will run from 5:00am to 5:30pm. At the conclusion of the competition, teams will gather at Panera Bread on Division St. in East Greenwich to celebrate the day, discuss findings, and to determine the winner. Teams will be competing to be engraved on the RI Cup Eagle trophy (pictured above), which they will possess until next year's contest. The location of Swan Point along the Seekonk River and the expanse of this greenspace, the largest in Providence, makes this location an ideal spot for migrating warblers as well as other birds. Some birders have even called Swan Point Cemetery a “mini Mt. Auburn”. Register at the link below. www.eventbrite.com/d/united-states--rhode-island/ocean-state-bird/ ![]()

“But in the early 1970s, we were not birdwatching. We were birding, and that made all the difference. We were out to seek, to discover, to chase, to learn, to find as many different kinds of birds as possible — and, in friendly competition, to try to find more of them than the next birder. We became a community of birders, with the complications that human societies always have; and although it was the birds that had brought us together, our story became a human story after all.” Other Events
